(click here) I have been MIA for a very good reason! I became a MOM!!!!! Through the miracle of adoption, we received a phone call just 3 short weeks ago and have been blessed with a beautiful baby girl, Kiley.
Here is a little photo slideshow capturing some of the highlights of our journey.
As my husband and I were watching football this afternoon, (Well, he's watching, I'm just listening here and there, while on my laptop and working on school stuff and doing laundry.) we saw some great commercials commemorating today. The best one was the Budweiser Clydesdale tribute. It made both of us tear up and pause to remember. Watch it and you'll see. (grab a tissue just in case). Apparently, it is a remake. It aired just once at the Super Bowl in 2002 after 9/11. Neither of us remember this, but it is very touching.

Now, on to something happy. I was honored to receive my first blog award! Andi, from Pencils, Glue, and Tying Shoes chose me for The Versatile Blogger Award!
The first week of school was one of the best ever! I kept pinching myself to see if it was for real or just a dream. Then, today...errr, I had a whole different group! Everyone came out of their shells! OMG! What happened to my precious little class?! Who took them?! Where did they go?! I tried to think, no, we didn't have indoor recess yet. Nope, not a full moon. Maybe the cold front that has brought cooler weather was to blame? One little gem had a melt down and copped a major attitude. I thought I had gone back to teaching 7th grade. Holy cow, a first grader?! Then, the infamous parent phone call followed and more frustrations came about. I vented at lunch (for the first time this year), but then felt bad about it. My team is awesome and we all feel you need to let it out, but not dwell. I think I did a good job following that. Then, tonight, I came across The Cornerstone Devotion for Teachers blog. I hadn't visited there in quite some time, but so glad I read it this evening. It was perfect and exactly what I needed to hear. The topic was Gratitude Adjustment. Boy could I relate! Read it and see for yourself.(click here) I am THANKFUL for today and that I have a job. I am THANKFUL I get to do something I love every day, even the difficult days. I am THANKFUL to have a challenging student. I know God has placed them in my care and I have much to learn from them. I am THANKFUL I'm a teacher!

I do feel better when I train my brain to think this way! The next time you have a bad day or feel yourself being pulled in by negativity, jump over to the Cornerstone Devotion for Teachers.
You can choose the color, the picture, and the wording.I thought it would be cute to print this one and hang in the teacher restroom that my team and I share.

Open House was last night and I came home with every intention of taking a walk before sunset and enjoying these last little bits of summer. Then, I wanted to log on to my BFF (my laptop) and soak my brain in blogland, BUT... I made the mistake of sitting down on the couch and the next thing I knew, my husband is saying, "hon, time to go to bed" . I fell asleep sitting up!!!! So, without further adieu, I'm linking up for the last two topics with "I'm Blog Hoppin'" for Teacher Week.
I did show before and after pics way back at the beginning of August, but I'll just share some of my favorites. I have a nautical theme, with a little ocean/beach sprinkled in as well.

Beth Newingham was my inspiration with her nautical theme. This is the entrance to my classroom. I have since added little sailboats with student names to the left of my door in the netting. The kids make their lunch choice on the door (it's magnetic). I have also added little fish with their names on them and a magnet on the back.

As soon as you walk in and look left, you'll see my Fundations board, dry erase board, Smart Board, and Math area. I've added a few things for math as well.

Looking back in my almost 20 year career, I have learned quite a few things about teaching, life, and how to try to balance the two. My advice to new teachers:

1.) Surround yourself with positive people, if you don't have a mentor, find one!

2.) Don't be afraid to ask for help! It's o.k., give yourself permission to do that!

3.) Beg, borrow and steal - but say "please" and "thank you", give credit where credit is due.

4.) Keep a journal, write down all the funny things your kids say and do. Looking back, I wish I would've started that my first year. The old brain can't quite remember everything.

5.) Family comes first, try not to make school your entire life! (although that's easier said than done!) Make time for those milestone moments that you can never get back. Life is too short.

6.) Remember, whatever is bothering you or upsetting you, keep in mind, "this too, shall pass". I know that sounds so cliche, but its true!

7.) Remember there is no such thing as the perfect lesson. You can plan til the cows come home, but 9 times out of 10, your plan will change! And that's o.k..

8.) Sometimes you have to bite your tongue and not say what's on your mind. You have to become Barbara Eden in "I Dream of Jeannie", (I know, I am seriously dating myself here! Yikes!) cross your arms, nod your head and say, "Yes, Master" to administration, to your principal. But then, you go back to your classroom, shut the door, and teach like you know it should be done! You know your kids best! That's why they often call us "Mom", instead of Mrs. .....

9.) Don't burn bridges. You never know what colleague might come back to be your principal or superintendent.

10.) Document EVERYTHING to CYA!!! (cover your a$$) Keep careful records of parent phone calls, dates, times, etc... make copies of notes, this will protect you. Communicate often and clearly.

and most of all, have FUN! Enjoy your class, savor those moments with your students that make you laugh or cry! Best wishes to all those new teachers out there. Have a wonderful year!

My husband and I have been married for almost 8 years this fall. We are in the waiting phase of adoption and can not wait to get that call! It is all we think about right now! I started an adoption blog first, as a therapeutic way to keep family and friends posted on our journey. Then, began this teacher blog too, to keep my mind busy. We are BIG Disney fans and travel at least once a year to Orlando. We ride all the rides and pose with ALL the characters. We are just big kids ourselves and can’t wait to bring our little one there some day.

How long have you been teaching?

This will be my 20th year teaching! UNBELIEVABLE!! Holy Cow where did time go?!!! I’ve taught Kindergarten, 4th, 7th, and 8th grades, but 1st is the level I’ve taught the longest and enjoy the most! I love their way of looking at the world and the hilarious things they say almost everyday!

You might not know…

I am the last person on Earth to begin texting! I just started doing it a little over a year ago and now I’m addicted! I know, Big Nerd!

What are you looking most forward to this year?

This is going to sound weird, and perhaps this should go in the previous category, but I’m looking forward to taking maternity leave when our adoption finally goes through! Yes, I can’t wait to meet my new little batch of cuties, and I’m excited to get to know them and teach them so much. But, in the same token, given all that we have been through, I honestly feel like we will be matched with a baby soon!

What do you need to improve?

I need to start saying “no” more often. I need to start sliding things off my plate, especially if I’m going to be a momma soon! I’ve been involved in more committees, groups, a mentor, a building rep, negotiations team, the list is endless! I also need to improve teaching writing. I think I stink at it! I really want to attend a conference or read a great book about Writer’s Workshop and how it all works with first graders.

I have never kept record of how many hours it truly takes me to set up my classroom, but this year I did. So far, these last 2 weeks, I have put in 40 hours. I am no where near finished, but I'm liking the progress so far.
My mom got it for me from Oriental Trading Co. about 3-4 years ago. It has netting/ tulle material that goes down to the floor, but sometimes they plop down in the bean bag chairs and it pulls on it. I don't want it to tear, so I gather it up and attach to the wall carefully.
The kids will wear a captain's hat and hold a plastic ship wheel. It looks so adorable when the pictures are all hanging up! I also have them fill out an "All About Me" form before school starts. They receive it at our Meet the Teacher/Open House Night. I post their "crew" picture and All About Me papers together side by side. Thanks to Beth Newingham for the awesome idea!
My new area rug in front of the Smart Board. LOVE this! Found it for $34.99 at Kirklands. It's a decent size, 5x7 ft. It's my favorite new addition to the room this year. (so far) Still more shopping to do!

Soooooo, that's it for now, but I will post final pictures later. Lots of finishing touches to add!
The clip chart. The old, "How's Your Day Going?" and flip a card system was out the door. I kicked it to the curb and haven't looked back since! I had used that old system for years and it was fine, it worked. I just<strike> like</strike> absolutely LOVE the clip chart 100 times better! If you haven't heard of this classroom management system, you must read this e-book that explains it so perfectly. I guarantee, you'll see what I mean! I think it actually made me a better teacher! Well, since I made the decision to implement this system a week before school, I just made your basic chart, nothing fancy.

Fast forward to now, summertime, creative juices are flowing, I have made a new and improved clip chart to match my theme! I still have to print it and mount to the colored paper and laminate, but it's on the list!!! Here it is...wa-lah!
You can view this short clip of him being interviewed and standing up for teachers here. In this day and age, when educators have been and continue to be under attack, it is refreshing to hear someone in his position speak the way he did. BRAVO Jason Bourne, I mean Matt Damon!

Now about the giveaway... (insert drum roll here). If you like bags, (and what teacher doesn't? duh?!) We are famous for carrying a dozen of them, all on one side by the way... (so we can carry our coffee in the other free hand and open the door to school with our pinky.) True?! You are all shaking your heads yes right now aren't you? A fellow teacher once coined the term "scoliosis sack" for our way of carrying so many bags the way we teachers do! Jenn at Finally in First is throwing this fab giveaway with Mixed Bag Designs! It's a really cute idea for K,1st, or even 2nd grade. I've seen teachers tweak it just a bit and turn it into a snack for the upper grades. You simply attach the adorable poem to a cellophane bag or any clear baggie, filled with confetti. It is perfect to give out at Meet & Greet night before school starts. It's a way to ease and calm the fears of those little ones the night before school. My theme is nautical, but I thought, why not create a few with some different themes. So, here are a few samples with a Pirate theme, Ocean/Beach theme, and a basic Back to School theme. Enjoy!

Loft is probably a favorite store for many of you! The extra little love they give with the teacher discount is so sweet! Today, I just got an email from probably my ultimate favorite store - Talbots! Now, don't get me wrong, I know they are on the pricey side. But the quality of clothing, it is totally worth it to me, mainly because everything fits me to a tee. It's like a taylor measured every inch (and trust me, there are a LOT of inches to measure, especially on the backside! ha ha!) and made all the clothes in the store for mwah! I will usually only buy clothing from Talbots, IF it is on sale. (unless it REALLY jazzes me and there's only one more of my size) So, now until Sept. 30th, all teachers get 20% off the full priced purchase. It's something! Every little bit counts!

If you like The Container Store, then jump on over to enter! One can never have too many bins, boxes, or crates! PLUS, plus, she is giving away some of their creative creations from both their Teachers Pay Teachers stores. I highly recommend spending some time on both their sites and stores for a new twist on some pouplar items.

On a separate note, yesterday's post I inquired about comment troubles. I tried again using some of your recommendations with Google Chrome. It totally worked and I even have the little picture next to my name and everything! Silly to get so excited over the simplest of things! (or not so simple in my case!) ha ha!
I want to leave a message and some blogs are no problem. Others however, don't let me select my name or url. I've tried using my Google account, but it just repeatedly asks for my login/password info. I've typed and retyped my comments only for them to be gone completely each time. Someone mentioned Google Chrome may be better, or Blogger Draft. I'll have to play around a bit. I also found a link saying that it's a setting that needs to be adjusted by the owners of the blogs. I am reading more about Open ID too. If anyone knows the solutions to my problems with commenting, I'd love any tips you might have! Thanks in advance!
Linking up with Clutter Free Classroom to share my favorite recipe during the school year- Crockpot Chicken and Stuffing. Mmm, mmm, good! If you like easy peasy, few ingredients, tastes like Amish cooking, then this dish is for you!

Ingredients:
2-3 boneless, skinless chicken breasts
1 can Cream of Chicken soup
2/3 c. of milk
1 box Stove Top stuffing (chicken flavor)

Get your crockpot out and grease the bottom with a little butter. (I know, sounds like Paula Dean!)
Cube 2-3 chicken breasts (If the chicken is partially frozen, it's actually better. Two reasons: it's easier to cut and I think it makes more gravy!) After your chicken, add 1 can Cream of Chicken or cream of celery or mushroom if you like). Add 2/3 cup of milk. In a separate bowl, put stuffing mix and water(follow the box directions for amount of water, I think it's like a cup and a half?), mix to moisten the stuffing. Spoon stuffing mix over top the soup/milk. Cook on low for 4-5 hours. That's it!

I like to serve this with a few veggies, corn, green beans and some mash potatoes. You could pair it with a salad and some rolls. Wal-lah! Everyone will think you cooked all day! The chicken is so tender and the soup/milk create a creamy gravy.
What better way to start, than by linking up with Mel D. at Oh The Places You'll Go Teacher Resources and share some of the hilarious things my students have said over the years. I just realized the linky party was posted a few days ago. I hope I'm not breaking any "blog etiquette" by linking today. Someone PLEASE tell me if that's a no-no! Anyways, we could all use a good laugh no matter what day it is! Right?!

O.K. so here goes...

Several years ago, while taking my 1st grade class to the restroom, the first week of school, a boy comes out quickly to announce, "Mrs. M...someone '2ed' in the '1'!" I was puzzled and asked, "What?!". He looked frustrated and explained again, "Someone 2ed in the 1!" I finally figured it out, in the boys restroom, there are 2 freestanding urinals and one toilet in a stall. Some little cutie apparently didn't know where to go "number two" and did it in the "number 1". That had to be awkward! The urinals in the primary restrooms are very low to the ground though. Needless to say, I called the custodian on that one!

Just this year during Writer's Workshop a little girl was fully engaged in her story. She was almost ready to write her final copy. She quietly leaned over to the student next to her and whispered, "How do you spell giraffe?". I was conferencing with a different student across from her and I knew her story had nothing to do with animals. (I had conferenced with her the day before.) Curious, I stopped and asked her, "Sweetie, why do you need to know how to spell giraffe?" She proceeded to tell me, "Ya know, like when we first start writing our rough "giraffes", then you write a final copy next". Ah ha!
Rough Draft, DOES indeed sound much like "rough giraffe"! I tapped out the sounds, wrote it down on a sticky note, and showed her the correct word. Then, she stopped and said, "I wondered why they called it ROUGH giraffes (notice she still said it incorrectly), when really giraffes look pretty soft and smooth!"

And finally, one last giggle...

Two of my boys had just came back from Title I Reading one afternoon and asked to use the restroom. I normally don't let both go at the same time, but we were going to take a math test soon, so I allowed both to hurry and go. These two had been known to get on each others nerves from time to time. Lo and behold, one returned rather quickly and said, "T said a bad word!" I said, "What did it start with?"
Don't ask me why I said that! Little boy replied after a few seconds of thinking and finally said, "Ummm, the word started with 'C' ." I was stumped and thinking he meant "S". Then, "T" returned with his head down low, trying to sneak in... but I called him over to see what the story was. I asked him, "Did you say something inappropriate in the restroom?" Long sigh... "Yeah... I said crap!"
I was proud of both of them: the one who told the truth, and the other who got the first letter right!
He later admitted he wasn't sure if it started with a "c" or a "k"! I explained that the word wasn't a "bad" word, but one we probably shouldn't say. Then, I looked up at the clock and saw how much time we had left in the day and wanted so badly to say, "Oh crap, we gotta get going with our math test!" JUST to myself of course!
I started my whole love affair with "blogland" when I began our adoption blog. It was a way for me deal with the stress and ups and downs of the long and difficult process. We are still waiting, but I have a whole new addiction to teacher blogs! It is summer and I thought, why not give it a whirl right?! So, I'm diving in, trying something new. I am hoping to join Teachers Pay Teachers and the new Teachers Notebook soon, as a way to share and make a little extra $ on the side. Going back to my first thought... why on earth am I hoping to jinx myself? Well, I hope that if I keep busy with my blogs, that God will bless us soon(er) with a little one. I know I can continue to blog, but probably just not as often. All you moms out there are probably saying, "keep dreamin' sista!" right? Nevertheless, I am excited to begin!
